SEOUL, Oct. 31 (Yonhap) -- Unis, formerly of girl group DIA, revealed that after concluding her challenging time with DIA, she was firm in her decision to step away from singing. However, listening to La La Land's soundtrack, particularly the song Audition, rekindled her passion for music.
In a recent interview, she explained, "The song struck a deep chord with me, and I cried a lot. I realized I couldn’t walk away from music. I reached out to producer Kim Jung-woo [of band Toxic], asking him to help me start fresh."
Embracing this new chapter, Unis has since collaborated with Kim to establish herself as a singer-songwriter, releasing a series of singles in 2023 including Black Hole, Flower Rain, A Song I Often Sing, and most recently, Reverie.
She noted, "I've always wanted to go solo since the group songs didn't quite align with what I excel at. I’ve tried different styles like ballads, R&B, and dance, but I feel most drawn to band music. There's just something cool about it," she added with a smile.

Her latest single, "Reverie," reflects her affection for band music, likening a breakup to a bittersweet daydream. She reflected, "Everyone has a happy memory they hold onto, and I thought, why not write a song about that? I even dream about performing on stage with the DIA members sometimes. Despite the struggles, those moments made me happy."
Unis emphasized her desire to stand out musically, adding, "Producer Kim’s approach of using only live instruments instead of virtual ones was a huge influence on me.”
Recalling her DIA days, she mentioned, "Our agency’s CEO, Kim Kwang-soo, also loved bands, so I took up the bass guitar, which sparked my interest in band music."
Unis will hold her first fan meeting On November 2, "The First Page," in Seoul, showcasing her growth as a singer-songwriter.
"It’s my friends-like fans who’ve kept me going," she said gratefully. "I’ll be playing electric guitar myself, performing covers, and connecting with fans in ways I haven't before."
Looking forward, she expressed her ambition: “Starting with this fan meeting, I want to gradually expand my shows and solidify my place as a solo musician. I’m proud of myself for sticking with music through these nearly ten years. Ha ha."
