Independence fighter's remains laid to rest

Soldiers carry the portrait of late Korean independence fighter Hwang Ki-hwan and a coffin containing his remains during a ceremony at the National Cemetery in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul, on April 10, 2023, to lay them to rest after they were repatriated to South Korea the same day, 100 years after he died in New York in 1923. Hwang, a Korean-born American soldier who served as a diplomat in Paris and London from 1919 to 1921, worked toward Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule (1910-45). Hwang inspired the hit South Korean TV series "Mr. Sunshine" (2018). (Yonhap)
