New Jersey Senate passes resolution designating Lunar New Year

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. state of New Jersey's Senate has passed a resolution designating Lunar New Year to commemorate it, a Korean American assemblywoman said on Tuesday, as various Asian countries celebrate the beginning of a new lunar calendar year.

On Monday, the Senate adopted the resolution designating a certain new moon following each year's winter solstice as Lunar New Year in New Jersey, according to legislator Ellen Park.

The resolution used the expression, Lunar New Year, rather than Chinese New Year or Spring Festival -- an apparent move to avoid using the name of a specific country as it is celebrated by South Korea and other countries as well.

"Lunar New Year is celebrated in various forms, including the fifteen-day Chinese Spring Festival and three-day Korean Seollal," the resolution read.

It also pointed out that approximately 10 percent of residents in New Jersey are of Asian descent and the state takes pride in its population's diversity of culture.

Should New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy sign it, the state would designate Lunar New Year to commemorate it.

The lower chamber of the state's legislature passed the resolution last year.

Separately, the state's Senate also passed a resolution designating Nov. 22 as Kimchi Day, a traditional Korean dish.
