DMZ art hotel "Re:maker" opens in Goseong

Seoul, May 19 (Yonhap) -- "Re:maker," the world's second border art hotel created by artists, will open at a place adjacent to the DMZ in Myongpari, Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon Province, on the 20th, the Gangwon Art & Culture Foundation said.

Banksy, a British artist who created the hotel, drew attention in 2017 for designing the "Walled Off Hotel," which opened in Bethlehem, Israel.

The art hotel, which began construction on June 1 last year, has eight art rooms and auxiliary facilities in two two-story buildings.

It contains the reality of the Korean Peninsula, which is still confronted by ideological barriers, and hopes for harmony and peace.

The Gangwon Cultural Foundation explains that the art rooms, which are actually rooms where guests stay, are themselves unique works and small art galleries under the theme of peace, ecology and the future.

Each space has a genre-crossing artwork, and even objet, including everyday props, has been touched by artists.

From October last year to April, a total of eight writers (teams) participated and completed the project over about half a year.

In addition to the works, it also has additional facilities such as restaurants and community rooms and has prepared various experience events.

Nearby are the Unification Observatory, Myeongpa Beach, and DMZ Museum.

The hotel is the result of a project pushed to transform the border area with a strong existing military image into a peaceful image through art and develop it into a new culture, arts and tourism resource.

"We hope that the art hotel remaker will become a representative tourist attraction in Goseong-gun," said Kim Pil-guk, head of the Gangwon Cultural Foundation. "We hope that it will be a place that gives hope to many people during difficult times due to Covid-19."
