PM Kim convenes emergency meeting to review Middle East situation
SEOUL, March 1 (Yonhap) -- Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Sunday convened an emergency meeting of government officials to review the situation in the Middle East following the death of Iran's supreme leader in attacks by the United States and Israel.
Kim will preside over the meeting scheduled for later in the evening, during which he will receive briefings on the Middle East situation and discuss response measures, his office said.
The meeting comes after President Lee Jae Myung ordered a prime minister-led emergency response system over the Middle East situation upon departing earlier in the day for a two-nation trip that is set to take him to Singapore and the Philippines.
About 60 South Koreans are currently in Iran, while around 600 are in Israel, with no casualties reported from them so far, the foreign ministry said.
The foreign ministry also plans to hold a meeting with staff from its headquarters and overseas missions later in the day to review conditions facing Koreans in the region and discuss measures to ensure their safety, according to the ministry.
