Boy group KickFlip returns with youthful energy in 'My First Kick'

By Shim Sun-ah

SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- K-pop boy group KickFlip returned Monday with its fourth EP, "My First Kick," led by the high-energy lead track, "Eye-Poppin'," a hyper-punk-based dance number about a daring confession to one's first love.

The group, who previously sang cheerfully about young romance in last year's "My First Flip," said the new record continues the story of youthful emotions and awkward beginnings.

The seven-track album also includes the prereleased single "Twenty" and tracks such as "Stup!d," "Scroll," "Roar" and "My Direction."

During a press showcase for the new album in Seoul, frontman Kyehoon, who took part in writing and composing the main track, described it as "a bold and playful song that captures the wish to be noticed, even if it means standing out in someone's eyes."

When asked if rock-based sounds define KickFlip's identity, Kyehoon noted that the band intends to keep experimenting.

"We've used rock elements a lot so far, but we want to challenge ourselves with different genres and concepts," he explained.

The singer added that the album captures the members' transition into their 20s. "It's the first time since our debut that all members contributed to the songwriting, and we wanted to express the freshness and emotions typical of people in their early 20s," he said. "The attitude of continually taking on challenges, even if we might fail, is exactly what KickFlip stands for."

During the showcase, member Minje confirmed that he recently gave up his dual citizenship with New Zealand. "I chose to keep my South Korean nationality because I plan to continue working hard in Korea," he said, adding that he had no hesitation during the process.

The new EP is set for release at 6 p.m. Monday on major streaming platforms.
