Public-private team to track down remains of independence fighter

Patriots and Veterans Affairs Minister Kwon Oh-eul speaks during a ceremony in Seoul on March 18, 2026, to launch a 23-member public-private team tasked with tracking down and repatriating the remains of independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun (1879-1910), believed to be buried in China. During the Japanese colonial rule of Korea, Ahn was executed at a prison in China by Japanese authorities after being arrested in 1909 for assassinating Ito Hirobumi, the Japanese resident-general in Korea, at a railway station in Harbin, a city in China's Heilongjiang Province.
