Ex-President Yoon apologizes for causing pain after receiving life term over martial law bid

By Chae Yun-hwan

SEOUL, Feb. 20 (Yonhap) -- Former President Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday apologized for causing pain and suffering to the people following his conviction over his failed 2024 attempt to impose martial law.

"I deeply apologize to the people for making you experience much despair and suffering due to my shortcomings," Yoon said in a statement, while defending his decree.

On Thursday, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced him to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of leading an insurrection through his martial law decree.

The ruling came 14 months after the former president made the surprise declaration of martial law on Dec. 3, 2024.
