Number of listed firms involved in M&As slightly up in 2025: data

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- The number of local listed firms involved in merger and acquisition (M&A) deals increased slightly from a year earlier in 2025, industry data showed Thursday.

A total of 150 listed companies in South Korea were involved in either a completed or an ongoing M&A deal as of end-December, according to the data from the Korea Securities Depository (KSD).

The figure marks a 1.4 percent increase from the comparative figure in 2024.

By market, 47 firms were listed on the KOSPI, the country's main bourse, while the remaining 103 were listed on the secondary KOSDAQ market.

Mergers accounted for the majority of M&A activities last year at 129 cases.

The total amount of appraisal rights payments, or those made to buy out the stake held by shareholders who disagree with an M&A decision, dropped 89.2 percent on-year to 54 billion won (US$37.9 million), the KSD said.
