Court rejects lawsuit opposing Yongin semiconductor cluster

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- A court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit by environmental activists seeking to nullify the government's approval of a large-scale semiconductor cluster project in Yongin, 50 kilometers south of Seoul.

The Seoul Administrative Court made the ruling in the lawsuit launched by members of environmental activist group Climate Solution and 16 people in March last year.

The plaintiffs claimed that the land ministry's approval of the Yongin semiconductor cluster was unlawful because of problems with the calculation and reduction plan for greenhouse gas emissions as stipulated in the Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and other laws.

The Yongin semiconductor cluster, inaugurated in March 2023, aims to serve as a key production hub for advanced semiconductor products of major semiconductor companies, such as Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc. Samsung, for instance, received approval from the land ministry in 2024 to invest approximately 360 trillion won (about US$245 million) to build six chip manufacturing facilities in the cluster.
