Agriculture minister discusses food security cooperation, food exports with UAE

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryung has met with the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) climate minister to discuss food security cooperation and exports of halal food made in Korea, Song's office said Thursday.

In her meeting with UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak on Wednesday (local time), Song proposed a memorandum of understanding between the two countries to boost food security cooperation, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

The two discussed applying Korea's smart farming technologies in the UAE and boosting the countries' joint response to a potential food security crisis that can be caused by climate change.

Song also asked for the UAE's support for halal certification of food produced in South Korea under Islamic rules to help Korea expand its halal food exports in the Middle East, the ministry said in a press release.

"As consumers of halal food account for around 25 percent of the world's population, the government will foster halal food as a key export item for diversification of Korea's food exports," Song was quoted as saying.
