Jeju massacre, post-war reconstruction archives added to UNESCO Memory of the World
SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) -- Archives documenting the Jeju April 3 uprising and South Korea's post-war reconstruction efforts have been added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, the government said.
According to the Korea Heritage Service, UNESCO approved the inscription during an executive board meeting in Paris on Thursday (local time), following a recommendation from the program's International Advisory Committee.
The addition brings the total number of South Korean entries on the Memory of the World list to 20.
The Jeju archives chronicle the massacre of islanders by government forces between March 1, 1947, and Sept. 21, 1954. The collection includes court records, news articles, investigation reports, victims' testimonies and photographs.
The post-war reconstruction archives document nationwide recovery efforts following the 1950-53 Korean War. The collection includes about 9,600 items, such as public records on reforestation and government and civilian initiatives for national rehabilitation.
