Hanwha appoints ex-Canadian Navy officer to lead Ottawa submarine project bid
SEOUL, Jan. 21 (Yonhap) -- Hanwha Ocean Co. has appointed Glenn Copeland, a former Royal Canadian Navy officer, as chief executive officer (CEO) of its newly established Canadian unit to lead a bid to secure a major Ottawa submarine project, the company said Wednesday.
According to the maritime subsidiary of South Korea's Hanwha Group, Copeland will lead Hanwha Defence Canada, headquartered in Ottawa, to oversee local defense and naval business operations as the company pursues the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project bid.
Canada is currently pushing for the project, under which the country plans to acquire eight to 12 submarines with a total budget of up to 60 trillion won (US$43.7 billion). Hanwha Ocean has been shortlisted as a final contender.
Copeland served for 22 years in the Royal Canadian Navy and later joined Lockheed Martin Canada as general manager. There, he was involved in major programs including the Halifax-class frigate modernization project.
Hanwha Ocean said the appointment underscores its strategy of embedding experienced local leadership to strengthen competitiveness and signals a long-term commitment to Canada's naval modernization and broader defense ecosystem.
