Gangneung Dano Festival
Ritual operators wearing face masks amid the coronavirus pandemic brew "sinju," or sacred wine, that will be used for traditional rites of the Gangneung Dano Festival in Gangneung, some 240 km east of Seoul, on May 5, 2022. The libation making, with rice donated by citizens, heralds the start of the festival, a UNESCO intangible cultural asset, during which participants pray for favorable weather for farming, fishing and a good harvest. Organizers of the festival, which will run from May 30 through June 6 this year, will allow citizens to make in-person appearances after it was held virtually for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
