Additional radiation detectors installed at fisheries market over Fukushima radiation fears

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- The Seoul city government said Monday it has installed two additional radiation detectors at the Garak agriculture and fisheries wholesale market in southern Seoul as part of efforts to allay public concerns over Japan's release of treated radioactive water into the ocean.

The hyperpure germanium detectors, also known as HPGe Gamma Ray Spectroscopy, are a precision device that checks the radiation levels of a product for three hours. The new detectors came in addition to the existing quick testers that take one hour to examine radiation.

The city also plans to establish a laboratory for thorough radiation inspection, equipped with a pretreatment facility, and recruit more professionals to better ensure food safety.

The professional inspectors will check the radiation level of randomly grabbed samples of fish and seafood products, and request the city's public health research institute to conduct a reexamination in case of suspected excessive radiation.

The radiation inspection results of the marine products and processed fisheries can be reviewed by consumers at the city's food safety and information website (fsi.seoul.go.kr) in real time.
