Records on 2 Korean civil revolutions added to UNESCO register
This image, released by the Cultural Heritage Administration on May 18, 2023, shows a letter written by a peasant troop member during the 1894-95 Donghak Peasant Revolution, an armed rebellion led by peasants and followers of the Donghak religion that challenged the local government's heavy taxes and oppression during the Joseon Dynasty. South Korea's archival records related to two of the nation's historic grassroots revolutions -- the April 19 Revolution, a historic student-led pro-democracy movement against the autocratic rule of then President Rhee Syng-man in 1960, and the Donghak Peasant Revolution -- were added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register the same day, the administration said.
