Hyundai Motor recalls over 390,000 vehicles due to possible engine fires

LOS ANGELES, May 5 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor is recalling 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, due to problems that can result in possible engine fires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall of Hyundai Motor on the 4th (KST), according to the Associated Press.

The vehicles to recall are 203,000 units of Santa Fe Sport SUVs from 2013 to 2015, 187,000 units including Elantras from 2019 to 2020, and 2019 through 2021 Konas and Velosters.

NHTSA blamed short circuits to anti-lock brake systems (ABS) and insufficient piston ring heat treatment due to oil spills for engine fires.

NHTSA advised owners to park their vehicles outdoors until they address the risk of engine fire on recalled vehicles.

Depending on the reason for the recall, customers can receive services such as replacing ABS computers and fuses at Hyundai Motor's dealerships in the U.S., installing piston noise detection software, and replacing engines if necessary.

Last month, Kia, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, recalled over 147,000 units, including 2020 and 2021 Soul and Seltos SUVs, due to the piston ring problem, the Associated Press reported.
