Gangneung Dano Festival

Ritual operators wearing face masks amid the coronavirus pandemic brew "sinju," or sacred wine, that will be used for traditional rites of the Gangneung Dano Festival in Gangneung, some 240 km east of Seoul, on May 16, 2021. The libation making heralds the start of the festival, a UNESCO intangible cultural asset, during which participants pray for favorable weather for farming, fishing and a good harvest. Organizers of the festival, which will run from June 10-17 this year, will hold it virtually citing the pandemic after people were not allowed to make in-person appearances at the same event last year.
