SEOUL, July 6 (Yonhap) -- As Hyundai Motor's luxury car brand Genesis continues to grow, one out of five Hyundai cars sold in Korea are Genesis vehicles.
Amid the trend of high-end and large-scale automotive markets, Genesis' sales are also breaking high records.
According to Hyundai Motor on the 6th, Genesis' sales in the second quarter of this year were 39,826 units, which rose 21.1 percent from 32,884 units in the previous quarter.
By car, the G80 sold the most among Genesis brands with 16,950, followed by GV70 12,635 units, GV805,922 units, G702,485 units and G901,834 units.
Genesis accounted for 19.8 percent of Hyundai Motor's second-quarter sales (206,682 units), marking the highest figure ever. In comparison to the previous quarter (17.7 percent), it increased 2.1 percentage points.
Genesis' sales have only contributed 10% to sales since Genesis became independent as a separate brand in late 2015. However, the GV80, the brand's first sports utility vehicle (SUV), launched last January, began selling regularly in the second quarter and strengthened its SUV lineup with the launch of the GV70 late last year.
As of the quarter, it briefly slowed to 14.3% in the third quarter after recording 16.2% in the second quarter of last year, but has steadily increased its portion to 15.2% in the fourth quarter of last year and 17.7% in the first quarter of this year.
The GV80 has gained popularity, with 15,000 units signed in just one day on the first day of the contract, driving Genesis' growth. This year, when the effect of new cars is somewhat lower, a total of 11,547 units have been sold until last month, continuing to be sold around 2,000 units per month.
A total of 22,701 units of the GV70 have also been sold until last month, which has been on sale in earnest since this year.
The new G80, which underwent a generation change, also sold a total of 56,150 units (including some old ones) last year, setting the highest annual sales record, followed by 35,66 units in the first half of this year, up 35.9% from the same period last year.
In addition, if electric vehicle models are added soon, it is predicted that sales of Genesis will increase even faster.
The brand's first electric vehicle G80 powered model, which will be released this month, is a derivative of the internal combustion engine-based G80, which can run up to 427km per charge in Korea. It will also be equipped with 'Solar Roof' that charges batteries of vehicles using solar energy.
During the third quarter, JW (project name), a small and medium-sized SUV based on E-GMP, will also be released.
As a result, sales of Genesis brands are expected to reach 150,000 units this year. Last year, it recorded 108,384 units, surpassing 100,000 units per year for the first time, and this year, 72,710 units were sold in the first half alone.
Genesis' accumulated global sales surpassed 500,000 units in May, five and a half years after its launch.
In particular, sales growth is notable in the U.S., a luxury car battleground. Since its launch in the U.S. in 2016, its cumulative sales have recently surpassed 100,000 units. The GV80 drew attention because it was the car he was driving at the time of the Tiger Woods accident.
Last month, Genesis sold 4,054 units in the U.S. market, the highest monthly sales.
Genesis launched its brands in Canada, the Middle East, Russia and Australia following the U.S., and this year, it also announced full-fledged entry into China and Europe, major markets for luxury cars.
