SEOUL, Mar. 2 (Yonhap) -- "I think I wanted to play a realistic and character who lives daily life that we can relate to."
Actress Kim Da-mi, who we met in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, on Thursday, revealed how she appeared in the movie "Soulmate."
"I tend to choose the next film by considering whether I can show a different side of me," she said, who shot the work after the drama films "The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion" (2018) and "Itaewon Class" (2020).
Miso, played by Kim Da-mi, is a character who has had to live alone since childhood. The existence of her best friend Ha-eun (Jeon So-nee) is even more special because she grew up without being cared for or loved by her parents.
Kim Da-mi said, "Miso is a free-spirited but very delicate person on the outside," adding, "Only Ha-eun will know the true nature of such a smile." While acting, she said, "I wanted to show the delicacy of my smile slightly, so I tried to express it a lot with a smile as if I didn't."
She said that her real personality is very introverted, saying, "I resemble Miso in that she is playful in front of her friends and doesn't express everything," but added, "I resemble Ha-eun in parts that don't enjoy challenging things so much."
"At first, the director said he thought of me as Ha-eun rather than Miso. But I wanted to act more freely and play during the shot, so I appealed that I wanted to be Miso. I think it's really fun when I express and act things that I can’t do in real life."
“Soulmate” is the story of Miso and Ha-eun, who meet as children and become best friends. The relationship between the two friends, who have always been together since elementary school, undergoes a curve as time passes and the environment changes.
Kim Da-mi has recalled she thought of her own experience a lot while watching the movie. "I also had a friend who I always played with when I was in school, but as we became older, we gradually became distant. I sometimes think of her, but I don't keep in touch with her. I think it's very meaningful that we went through those times together."
She defined the relationship between Miso and Ha-eun in the movie as 'love'.
"The feelings are a little small to express only as a friendship. In the beginning of the shoot, we said that friendship is love. When I was young, I thought of such relationships as friendship, but now that I see them from afar, I feel like a form of love. Through this movie, I think I was able to think more about friendship."
Regarding Jeon So-nee, who worked with her in acting, she said, "She is a very delicate and thoughtful person."
"So-nee thinks a lot about one text and one line and asks the question, 'Why?' She kept thinking about it while discussing it with me or with the director. She seemed really cool and I felt comfortable with her from the first time I saw her. We went to a cafe on our second meeting, and we talked for five hours. (laughs)
As the movie captures the process of Miso and Ha-eun changing for more than a decade, Kim Da-mi also played all of Miso's scenes from her teenage years as a high school student to her 30s.
Kim Da-mi said, "Of course, I can't say which age is youth, but I was happy to show you a scene as an actor that depicts the most beautiful time we spend while wearing a school uniform."
Following the movie "The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion," Kim Da-mi is solidifying her position as an actress with her lead roles from the drama "Itaewon Class" and "Our Beloved Summer" (2021).
"I want you to look at me as a role in the movie and think 'I want to see a different side of that actor,'" she said. "Now, I always want to show a different genre and a different side of me."
