SEOUL, May 13 (Yonhap) -- The 77th Cannes Film Festival will kick off tomorrow (local time) at the Lumière Grand Theater in the southern French city of Cannes, starting with the screening of the opening film "The Second Act." The festival will embark on a 12-day journey.

A total of 22 films from around the world have been invited to compete for the top prize, the Palme d'Or.

Korean films failed to make it to the competition section for the second consecutive year. Instead, two Korean films have received invitations to the non-competitive sections.

Director Ryoo Seung-wan's film "Veteran 2" has been invited to the Midnight Screening section, which introduces genre films, and will be screened on the 21st. Director Ryoo and lead actors Hwang Jung-min and Jung Hae-in are scheduled to attend the red carpet event before the screening.

The film is a sequel to the box office hit "Veteran" (2015), which attracted over 13 million viewers in Korea. It tells the story of detective Seo Do-cheol (played by Hwang Jung-min) of the Violent Crimes Unit, who joins forces with rookie detective Park Sun-woo (played by Jung Hae-in) to chase down a serial killer who has stirred up a storm.

Director Kim Lyang's documentary "Walking in the Movies," which depicts the life of Kim Dong-ho, former executive director of the Busan International Film Festival, will be screened in the Cannes Classics section on the 16th.

Cannes Classics is a section that screens documentaries about classic masterpieces or important figures in film history, and it marks the first time a Korean documentary has been featured in this section.

In the short film category, "Echo," directed by Lim Yoo-ri, a student at the Film Department of the Korean National University of Arts (K-Arts), has been invited to the La Cinefondation section. La Cinefondation is a competition section that showcases films made by students from film schools around the world.

Lim's directorial debut, "Echo," is a story about Ok-yeon, who, chased by drunken young men, escapes to a forbidden forest and meets the older sister next door whom she admired and married several years ago, confronting the truth of living as a woman.
