'Gwangju Chilseok Gossaum Nori' to kick off on February 3

SEOUL February 1 (Yonhap) -- “Gossaum Nori” which is often held during the full moon period in order to hope for the safety and well being of the town will be held in Gwangju City.

According to the information disclosed by Gwangju city government on Wednesday, the 40th “Chilseok Gossaum Nori” will be held at the Gossaum Play Theme Park on February 3 through February 5.

Gwangju Chilseok Gossaum Nori has been around since the tribal era within southern part of Korea.

“Gossaum Nori” which was awarded with the presidential award from the Korean Folk Art Festival in 1969 was later on appointed as the 33rd National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1970.

So called Loop Fight (Gossaum Nori) is done by two of the opposing team where they clash into one another on top of a tall loop shaped structure made of twisted straw rope.

The upcoming festival will showcase various segments such as “Fan Fun, Pin,” collaborative segment of Pansori and Tap dance, fireworks, Gossaum nori, and more.

Moreover, the festival will feature Samul Nori of Chilseok which is a traditional performance of Korea, burning of Daljip and more throughout the festival.
