SEOUL,
Nov. 6 (Yonhap) --
“At one time, Jaurim’s music approached anger with detachment,” said vocalist Kim Yoon-ah during a listening session for the new album held at the Under the Clouds Theater in Seoul on Wednesday. “This time, we’ve discovered a new self that no longer suppresses that emotion.”
The band’s 12th studio album, "LIFE!", will be released on Sunday. Jaurim described it as “an album that shouts ‘To life!’” and said it captures the turbulence and beauty of human existence. The 10-track record features three title songs — "LIFE!", "MY GIRL", and "STARS" — as well as diverse musical styles ranging from upbeat rock to brass-driven anthems.
The song "LIFE!" contrasts lyrics about chaos and struggle with bright rock rhythms, while "MY GIRL" stands out for its gritty guitar solo. "ATHENA", which opens with a triumphant brass fanfare, conveys a hopeful, hymn-like mood.
Kim said the inspiration for "LIFE!" came during a period of burnout. “It feels like I’m saying, ‘It may look like I’m dancing on stage, but I’m really struggling inside,’” she explained. “I believe many people living in this era can relate to that sentiment.”
Bassist Kim Jin-man added, “We’ve been especially eager to perform these songs live — they’re made to be heard that way.”
The band also recalled recording the track "VAMPIRE" at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, which has hosted artists such as The Beatles, Queen, and Oasis. “I was amazed by the studio’s 20 high-end microphones,” Kim said with a laugh. “But during recording, I somehow managed to blow out two of them — we ended up using three in total.”
Since debuting with "Purple Heart" in 1997, Jaurim has steadily released albums, becoming one of Korea’s most enduring rock acts. As they approach their 30th anniversary, the band remains humble.
“It feels too early to celebrate,” Kim said. “We still have so much to learn from our seniors. Even at 30 years, we’ll keep working hard.”
