SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Yonhap) -- It has been 1 year since rising star ‘asepa’ has first stepped into to the “wilderness” to defeat the evil “Black Mamba.” Aespa is successful rookie girl-group who released 3 combo hit songs in 1 year in the tense music industry where numerous new songs are dropped every year.
The band debuted in November 2020 with their first hit song “Black Mamba” then continued the jackpot with “Next Level” and “Savage,” according to their management agency SM Entertainment Wednesday.
The band’s name is a conjunction of “ae” and “aspect.” “Ae” is short for “Avatar X Experience” and “aspect” means “two sides.” Their universe is that they will meet their another ego, an avatar, to experience a whole new world.
The music video for “Black Mamba” set a new record for the fastest K-pop idol band’s debut song to reach 100 million YouTube views. “Next Level” and “Savage” topped not only Korea’s largest music site Melon’s “TOP 100” but the Weekly Chart as well.
This year’s girl groups to have ranked No.1 on Melon Weekly Chart are only aespa and Brave Girls.
The band’s 1st mini-album’s title song “Savage,” released last month, is still clinging to its high ranks on Korea’s major music sites. The album has entered 10 of Billboard charts including its 20th place on “Billboard 200.”
Aesap has become a half-million seller as the album recorded sales of 510,000 copies in 15 days of release.
As there are just few cases of a girl group’s album and music to become successful in the same time, we can see that they have become a trend.
The terms used to deliver their universe, such as “kwangya” (wilderness), “Synk” and “P.O.S” have become viral amongst gen MZ. Also, highlight dances of “Next Level” and “Savage” gained immense popularity through Tik Tok.
“Aespa’s unique concept aims to expand the entertainment’s genres to metaverse and targets the ‘digital-native” generation who are used to various digital contents. We will continually present more diverse and new experiences,” said SM Entertainment.
The band will attend “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” a Thanksgiving festival in New York on the 25th to meet the local fans.
To expand their stage to a global extent, they signed a contract with America’s biggest entertainment agency “Creative Artist Agency” (CAA) in July.
