Blockbuster 'Mogadishu' inches away from 1M viewers

SEOUL, Aug. 3 (Yonhap) -- “Escape from Mogadishu” (Mogadishu), directed by Ryu Seung-wan, ranked the top Korean box office hit of 2021.

On its 7th day after release, the film recorded accumulative 954,000 audiences, exceeding that of “Hard Hit” (951,000 people) starring Jo Woo-jin, according to Lotte Entertainment, the distribution company, Tuesday.

The film, based on a true story of North and South Korean officials’ escape from Somalia during the civil war in 1991, topped the box office on its release date, July. 28, and has secured 1st place since then, accounting for within 50% of the total ticket sales.

During the second week after its release, “Mogadishu” attracted a larger number of viewers (125,000 people) than that of the first weekdays (89,000 people), proving its immense popularity, according to the figure on Monday, Aug. 2.
