SEOUL, Apr. 4 (Yonhap) -- The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) at Stanford University is set to hold a conference, titled “The Future of Hallyu: Korean Cinema on the Global Stage,” on April 19, the Center confirmed Tuesday.
In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Center’s establishment, Christopher Hanscom, a professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at UCLA, and Kim Joo-ok, an associate professor of the Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University, will be presenting this conference featuring three panels with academics along with the Korean screenwriter Park Ji-eun and veteran actor Lee Byung-hun.
Park, who is best known to have written the scripts for the mega-hit television series “My Love from the Star” and “Crash Landing on You,” will share a conversation with professor Lee Young-jin of Standford University to lay out her detailed experiences of writing scenarios for K-dramas.
In the meantime, actor Lee, who starred not only in Korean television series and films such as “Iris” and “Mr. Sunshine” but also in the Hollywood film “Red: The Legend,” will also be attending this upcoming conference and talking to the audience, including Stanford students.
The previous conference centered on the topic of K-pop was held last year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the grand opening of the “Korea Program” at Standford’s Shorenstein APARC, which stands as the hub of scholarship on contemporary Korea and the issues shaping the future of the Korean peninsula and U.S.-Korea relations.
Shin Gi-wook, the director of Standford’s Shorenstein APARC and the Korea Program, said, “Following last year's conference on K-pop, we will focus on K-drama and Korean cinema this year, as they have been gathering attention also in the United States, and talk to consider the future,” adding, “We hope the conference would serve as an opportunity to present the soft power of K-content.”
