SEOUL, Mar. 9 (Yonhap) -- The Japanese animated fantasy adventure film “Suzume” has topped the box office on its first day of release, ushering in a new box office sensation.
The coming-of-age story for the 17-year-old Suzume, which hit the local box office on Wednesday, already attracted 143,000 moviegoers and scored first place.
Produced by the legendary anime filmmaker Makato Shinkai, “Suzume” follows the story of the titular protagonist Suzume who discovers portal doors leading to different areas in Japan. She goes on an adventure with Souta, a young girl who turned into a chair, trying to close the doors as they bring disasters to the places they appear in.
The brand-new anime blockbuster has been deemed the third part of an apocalyptic trilogy featured by Director Shinkai, following “Your Name Is.” (2017) and “Weathering with You” (2019). Shinkai’s blockbusters are all based on the Great East Japan Earthquake, which brought the worst harrowing damages all across the mainland in 2011.
Meanwhile, the Korean box office chart was dominated by several other Japanese films, including the animated sports film “The First Slam Dunk” sitting in second place, and another anime “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village” touching down in fourth place.
The three also scored first to third places in terms of ticket booking rates. “Suzume” topped this chart as well by taking 51.6% of tickets booked, continuing to take the local theaters by storm.
On the other hand, Korean-made films seemed to fall behind with the crime drama “The Devil’s Deal” sitting in third place and the documentary “IM HERO THE FINAL,” which screens the live recording of trot singer Lim Young-woong’s live concert and interviews, sitting in the fifth slot.
