The Cheonmachong Tomb used to be known under the name Ancient Tomb No. 155, which was given during the Japanese Occupation. Tomb No. 155 was unearthed as part of the Comprehensive Development of Gyeongju Tourism, established in 1971. As a result, amazing discoveries were made, such as around 10,000 pieces of artifacts, including a pair of birch bark saddle flaps and a gold crown. At the same time, an unprecedented form of grave construction and outer coffin structures were determined. The typical structure of an outer coffin tomb with stone mounds which can be witnessed from typical burial structure from the 4 through 6th century, was recovered along with glamorous grave goods that represent the cultural aspects of that time. Furthermore, Tomb No. 115 was renamed “Cheonmachong” after the excavation of the “Cheonmado” which is a painting of flying horses, on the saddle flaps.

The symposium is segmented into various parts starting with ▲ Organization, Role, and Everyday Lives of the Team ▲ Progression of the Excavation and Artifacts recovered ▲ Preparing and Publishing the Excavation Report ▲ Visiting of the President ▲ Competition in Coverage ▲ Significance of the Excavation of the Cheonmachong Tomb, etc., during which the veterans can freely reminisce and converse. A deliberative section for future research directions of Silla tombs also provides.

Moreover, KBS will broadcast a special episode regarding the famous educational program The Day, History Journal, on Sunday, April 9, from 9:40 PM, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the excavation of the Cheonmachong Tomb. A panel of diverse backgrounds will discuss the historical background and the significance of some major discoveries. At the same time, Yun Geun-il, the former Director General of the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, will make a special appearance to elaborate on the stories behind the scene.

Through the symposium and the special broadcast, the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Administration expects to reflect on the 50 years of the Cheonmachong Tomb and assess adequate and systematic research directions for cultural heritage protection and management in the future.
