SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Yonhap) -- Korean Symphony Orchestra has appointed David Reiland from Belgium as their 7th artistic director. The newly appointed will direct the orchestra for 3 years starting from January 2022, the orchestra announced Monday.
Director Reiland majored in conducting and composing at the Royal Academy of Music in Brussels, the École Normale de Musique de Paris and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg Austria. He served as associate conductor for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment of London and has been worked closely with conductors such as Simon Rattle, Mark Elder and Vladimir Jurowski.
He has served as music director of the Orchestre national de France and the Sinfonietta Laussanne of Switzerland since 2018. He is also the Principal Guest Conductor for the Münchner Symphoniker and regulary conducts the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker as an honorary “Schumann Gast.”
Reiland worked with the Korean Symphony Orchestra for opera, “Cosi Fan Tutte” in 2018, for opera, “Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny” premiered in Korea in 2019 and for “Korean Orchestra Festival” in 2020.
The artistic director picked “openness” as the Korean Symphony Orchestra’s strength.
“Their musicality gave me an extraordinary inspiration like an alchemy creating gold from scrap metal. My goal is to achieve international fame by adding intensive color to the orchestra’s musical asset,” said director Reiland.
He planned a goal to expand the Korean audiences’ experience by suggesting not only the traditional orchestra repertory but also music of composers with contrasting universes such as Berlioz, R. Strauss, Ravel, Mozart and Haydn. Also he will lead in spreading works and creations of Korean composers to the world.
