SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- The 1,000 year old Gangneung Danoje Festival, inscribed on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, will be held as per usual in three years as social distancing rules is lifted in South Korea.

The Gangneung Danoje Festival Committee announced on the 27th that it has decided to proceed normally, from the operation of the nanjang (temporary market) including food, and the Dano Experience zone along with the Sintongdae-gil Gilnoli.

Accordingly, this year's Gangneung Danoje Festival will be significantly restored back to the pre COVID-19 festivals.

The 2022 Gangneung Danoje Festival will be held from May 30th till June 6th under the theme of "Eurachacha Gangneung Dano Festival" in the Gangneung Danojang area.

In South Korea, "Eurachacha" has a dictionary definition of the sound made when one tries to overcome a difficult opponent, situation, or object.

It also contains the meaning of overcoming the difficulties of COVID-19 and going back to the daily life together through the Gangneung Danoje Festival, a festival of hope and prayer.

The Gangneung Danoje Festival was held online in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021, it had a small-scale festival mainly based on the exhibition.

This year, the Danojangsa Ssireum Competition hosted by the Korea Ssireum Association and the Gangneung Danoje Festival Short Video Competition hosted by the Gangneung Media Center are being held, raising expectations with various attractions and contents.

With many citizens also actively participating in the Shunjumi Bongjeong event, the Gangneung Danoje Festival will be in full swing.

An official from the Gangneung Danoje Festival said, "As it is a time where the citizens of Gangeung and the tourists are especially tired and exhausted due to COVID-19, we will do our best to keep Gangneung Danoje Festival, a festival of hope and prayer, to keep the tension and make the festival safe until the end."
