Satisfaction survey reveals 89% of visitors to be satisfied with viewing of Cheong Wa Dae

SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) -- It has been two months since Cheong Wa Dae opened to the public, and it has been revealed that nearly 9 out of 10 visitors were satisfied with the viewing.

While many of the visitors who visited Cheong Wa Dae, where one is able to feel the traces of past presidents wanted Cheong Wa Dae to be preserved as it is, there were also some saying that it is necessary to secure convenient facilities and manage its waiting time.

According to the Cheong Wa Dae Public Relations Promotion Team of the Cultural Heritage Administration on Wednesday, as a result of a face-to-face survey of 1,000 visitors aged 15 and over who visited Cheong Wa Dae from June 22 till June 26, 89.1% of the respondents said they were satisfied with the viewing.

Specifically, 38.7% were "very satisfied," followed by "generally satisfied" with 37.5% and "somewhat satisfied" with 12.9%.

On the other hand, 8% answered it with "average" and 2.9% answered with "dissatisfied."

The average score, which was converted into 100 points for viewing satisfaction, was calculated to be 83.2 points.

When visitors looked around Cheong Wa Dae, they chose "walking around the grounds of Cheong Wa Dae and viewing the landscapes" (61.8%) and "looking around the main building and guesthouse" (28.3%) as the most satisfying factors.

When asked if they would recommend visiting Cheong Wa Dae to others, 87.5% answered "yes," while 10% of the people answered with "normal" and 2.5% answered with "not recommended."

The biggest reason for visiting Cheong Wa Dae was the curiosity about the space that was previously considered as "the forbidden land."

36.9% (multiple responses) of the respondents said that they came to see Cheong Wa Dae "because I was curious about the president's office space," followed by "because it is a viewing space that is open to the public for the first time" (29.0%).

There were many opinions that "preservation" should be considered the top priority in the management and operation of Cheong Wa Dae.

64.3% of visitors selected "prevention and preservation of damage to the buildings, natural green areas, trees and many more surrounding Cheong Wa Dae" as their priority, while 23.8% answered "operating programs that can reveal the historicity and symbolism of Cheong Wa Dae" as their priority, making quite a difference between the two.

When asked about the future direction of the use and management of Cheong Wa Dae, 40.9% of the total respondents (multiple responses) answered that they would like to "preserve the original form as it is today, where the life and history of the presidents are alive."

It was then followed by "Creation of modern historical and cultural space where the history and national heritage of the past and present are preserved" with 22.4%, "a new cultural and artistic space such as museum or exhibition hall" with 15.2% and "a performance space combining tradition and modern culture" 9.9%.

Regarding the use of individual buildings such as the main building and the guesthouse, the most common answer was "I hope it will be used as a space that reenacts its original appearance as it is." In particular, in the case of the main building, 72.5% of the respondents wanted to keep its original appearance.

Most of the respondents also wanted to preserve the Green spaces including the Grand Garden and Nokjiwon (With about 120 kinds of trees as well as commemorative trees planted by presidents over the years, Nokjiwon is the most scenic outdoor space at Cheong Wa Dae) with 59.3% and 62.6% respectively. answering to preserve the landscape rather than using them as spaces for popular music performances or traditional culture.

However, with 49,000 people a day visiting Cheong Wa Dae, there were also some factors pointed out to be improved.

Visitors participating in this survey pointed out the lack of various convenience facilities (32.3%) within the Cheong Wa Dae grounds and taking a long time to visit indoor places, including the main building and guesthouse (31.3%), as the most important points to be improved.

"We will actively reflect the valuable opinions of the audience so that Cheong Wa Dae will be reborn as a 'place' that provides special experiences to the people, not just a 'space'," said an official from the promotion team.
