CHUNCHEON, Aug. 6 (Yonhap) -- Chuncheon City of Gangwon Province have declared to become a "coffee city" and will hold an online and offline coffee festival and combine a Metaverse platform next month.
The coffee festival, hosted by the city and organized by the Gangwon Information & Culture Promotion Agency, will be held online and offline in five areas, including the Animation Museum in Chuncheon and the Kubongsan Mountain area where there are numerous cafes, on Sept. 3-19, according to Chuncheon city on Friday.
The slogan for the festival is "Let's Coffee Chuncheon."
The festival organizers will establish a VR/AR web platform of coffee shops in Chuncheon by introducing an ICT-based metaverse platform that combines IT (information technology) and CT (cultural content technology), as well as provide 3D mapping services, and real-time synchronization services on Naver Place and SNS.
A variety of special exhibitions including the "Coffee Art and Artist" and "Robot coffee" will be held within the festival. Citizens will also have a chance to participate in making coffee as well.
Chuncheon city explained that Chuncheon is the representative coffee city in Korea as the military units from Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee beans, fought in Chuncheon as part of United Nations Command in the Korean War. Chuncheon city also established the first roastery cafe in 1968 at Gongjicheon.
In Chuncheon, the number of coffee shops increased sharply from 400 in 2018 to 672 last year, and more than 700 cafes have recently been thriving.
"Chuncheon has the perfect conditions in becoming a 'coffee city' when combining the historical stories, cafes, coffee experts, and other natural conditions. We will focus on industrialization so that cafes and cultural contents can be become a substantial factor of the local economy," said Chuncheon Mayor Lee Jae-soo.
