SEOUL March 6 (Yonhap) -- With the addition of humane aspect within the generic male protagonist figure of a romance story, a unique character has been created.
South Korean actor Jung Kyung-ho acted out a male protagonist figure Choi Chi-yeol, a math instructor at Pride Academy who is extremely famous among parents, but despite of his respect and reputation Choi Chi-yeol showcases very humorous characteristics throughout the series “Crash Course in Romance” provided by tvN.
Jung Kyung-ho who participated in an interview at a small café in Gangnam district, Seoul as the drama is coming to an end, addressed “I wanted to add some humane and fun aspect to the character Choi Chi-yeol, who is sleep deprived all the time and has issues eating,” adding “I thought, If I were to add some of the pettiness to such character, it will be portrayed as bit more humane.”
In the past, actor has appeared in various productions as very picky characters, for example, in “Hospital playlist,” Jung Kyung-ho plays a role of Kim Jun-wan, an associate professor of cardiothoracic Surgery, and in “Prison Playbook,” actor played a role of Lee Joon-ho, an elite prison guard, moreover actor has a history of playing a role of band’s leader through “Missing 9.”
“Since I have been playing a role of very keen, sharp, and sensitive characters I was worried,” adding “However, as I aged and became forty one, they way I act out the similar characters have changed a little bit.” addressed actor Jung Kyung-ho throughout his interview.
Considerably, majority of his characters have similarities, however they were portrayed differently throughout various productions. Significant differences within characters are rooted in characters different job occupation.
“The biggest point I take into consideration when acting out such characters is profession of the protagonist. Since Jun-wan is a professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, I tried my best to act out an doctor like figure, on the other hand, in case of Chi-yeol, since he is a teacher therefore I acted according to his job profession. By doing so I personally believe the style and characteristic of the figure changes.” stated actor Jung Kyung-ho throughout his interview.
Protagonist Choi Chi-yeol is one of the rare characters throughout the scene of S.Korean drama scene, he is a math instructor, therefore in order to be more smooth with the character, actor has bought a blackboard so that he can practice his role, and to take a step further, Jung Kyung-ho learned how to pronounce and address the subject from actual instructors for more accurate depiction of the character.
“Doctors, teachers and majority of the characters we see on South Korean drama series can be found easily throughout our lives, however famous Instructors within academies are very narrow subject, and only popular to those who are studying for their college entrance exam, therefore I didn’t know anything about the subject so I had to start from ground zero.” adding “I had to memorize some of the math equations, however it was very hard for me to understand so I decided to just memory the equation as it was written on the board,” moreover, actor addressed “Throughout the series, there are about 10 scenes where I write in front of kids, and in order for more accurate depiction of the scene I invited various instructors so that I can learn the way they write and speak, in total I have spent over two months learning how to write like instructors.”
Throughout the movie, Choi Chi-yeol lives a boring and dull life where the entire life of a character is solely geared towards teaching kids. However, through a sudden encounter Choi Chi-yeol crosses paths with Nam Haeng-seon, acted by Jeon Do-yeon who is a parental figure of Nam Hae-yi acted by Roh Yoon-seo who ends up showing path to living the life once again.
“Choi Chi-yeol, is filled with loneliness,” adding “By looking at the family of Nam Haeng-seon, he feels love and warmth once again throughout the series,” moreover actor Jung Kyung-ho addressed “ There are some of the feelings where it will budge in despite of its occurrence, when he encounters Haeng-seon’s food that food he receives from her was the key to opening his mind, the question he starts to think after tasting the food has led him to think of the warmth Haeng-seon’s mother has once showed to him in the past.”
Before the drama series aired, some of the critics worried that romance series between Jung Kyung-ho and Jeon Do-yeon who shows the age gap of 10 years.
As for such worries, actor Jung Kyung-ho addressed “Acting with actress Jeon Do-yeon can never go wrong, I have never worried of such thing in the past,” adding “Due to the quickly changing scene within the drama and the taste of the audiences, I had the thought to showcase something new, by acting alongside Jeon Do-yeon I have learned what it’s like to act similar but yet very different.”
Moreover, actor addressed “Throughout the series I have learned to be myself it more formative grounds,” adding “As I proceed throughout my acting career, I learned how to showcase myself, and now its time for me to solidify my grounds.”
