SEOUL, June 4 (Yonhap) -- Netflix has announced its intention to correct a mislabeling error in its original series "The Eight Show," where the East Sea was incorrectly referred to as the "Sea of Japan" in Spanish subtitles.

A Netflix representative stated on the 4th, "We have confirmed that the 'East Sea' mentioned by a character in the show was mistakenly labeled as 'Sea of Japan' in some language subtitles. We are currently in the process of correcting this and will thoroughly review to ensure no similar cases exist in the future."

The issue arose in a scene from "The Eight Show," released on the 17th of last month, where actor Ryu Jun-yeol sings the South Korean national anthem. The Spanish subtitles translated "East Sea" to "mar del Japón," meaning "Sea of Japan."

Seoul's Sungshin Women's University professor Seo Kyung-duk brought this to public attention through social media, stating, "Many netizens reported this issue, and given Netflix's global influence, I immediately sent a protest email."

"The Eight Show" revolves around eight individuals trapped in an eight-story space, participating in a show where they earn money over time. The cast includes Ryu Jun-yeol, Chun Woo-hee, Park Jung-min, and Bae Sung-woo.

The series has gained significant popularity, topping the non-English TV series category on Netflix during the week of the 20th to the 26th of last month.
