SEOUL, Mar. 8 (Yonhap) -- Korea Broadcasting System’s brand-new period television series “Oasis,” which mournfully depicts the twisted love story of three friends, has kicked off with an average nationwide rating in the range of 6%.

The very first episode of KBS 2TV’s melodrama series, aired at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, scored an average rating of 6.3%. Set in a serene and small village in Yeosu in the 1980s, the new series unfolded the three high school students’ triangular love affair.

The episode featured Lee Doo-hak (played by Jang Dong-yoon) and Choi Chul-woong (Choo Young-woo), who were each other’s best homies, both developing feelings for Oh Jung-shin (Seol In-ah), a girl from Seoul who transferred to their school. The trio quickly become close friends.

Choi, the only son from an affluent family in the village, plays a prank on Oh and treats her like a close friend, while Lee, who was born as a son of a tenant farmer, quietly takes care of her from behind her back. However, the duo’s friendship began to crack as Lee suddenly tops the school with his excellent grades. Choi, who gets upset for sliding down to the second, ends up crossing the line while showing off his displeasure and leaves a mental scar on his friend.

By capturing the scenery of a rural village in the 1980s, the new melodrama series captivated viewers with a background setting that is in stark contrast with that of these days, as if they were watching an old film. The episode also received a rave review for realistically reflecting the chaotic social situation of the time, during which the military power overruled the country.

The cast also showed off their immersive acting skills and kept viewers on the edge of their seats. Jang Dong-yoon, in particular, splendidly portrayed the conflicting emotions of Lee Doo-hak, who had to comply with his father’s words to keep his distance from Choi Chul-woong, the son of their house owner, but also was consumed with frustration over the reality of not being able to fully show off his capability.
