SEOUL December 15 (Yonhap) -- “I am never the type of person to be shy about these things, however, it has been eight years since I showcased production as a director. Therefore I am very nervous, however, I would like to receive all the love and warm comments from the audiences.” addressed Director Yoon Je-kyoon throughout the interview conducted at a café within Jongno district.
Director Yoon Je-kyoon who is known for exceeding over 10 million audiences in two of his movies have returned with upcoming movie “Hero” which is his latest release after the premiere of “Ode to my Father” in 2014.
South Korean musical movie “Hero” about the life of a freedom fighter Ahn Jung-geun is a reproduction of Musical “Hero” into a film version.
Director Yoon Je-kyoon explained that after watching the musical “Hero” featuring actor Jung Sung-hwa he decided to create a movie version of the musical in 2012.
“Musical movie for a director is a hard decision to make, however, trying something new motivated me a lot. The production of ‘Hero’ was the hardest and gave me the most amount of stress out of all the work I have done so far.” addressed director Yoon throughout his interview about the movie “Hero.”
Movie version of “Hero” carefully followed the original version of the musical. On the role of the protagonist An Jung-geun, actor Jung Sung-hwa who has been acting out the character since the premiere of the musical version was casted. Also director stated, “My biggest goal throughout the production was to create a movie that will never let down not only the audiences but specifically those who have already watched the musical, also I wanted to produce a movie that can also be famous in foreign nations.”
“With those two goals in mind, I started to cast actors and actresses for the movie. There were disagreements between my thoughts and investors, however, there isn’t anyone who would be a better fit for the role other than actor Jung Sung-hwa in South Korea. And throughout the production actor Jung Sung-hwa exceeded my expectations.” stated director Yoon throughout the interview conducted in Jongno district.
Moreover, director Yoon addressed that throughout the entire production everyone engaged within the film participated under the belief of ‘Despite of hardship we should never take the easy way out.’ As a result they have decided to use the live recording. 70 percent of the music inserted throughout the movie was recorded live at the scene of production.
“Every time and every minute of the shooting I have regretted not taking the easy way out by recording the tracks after finishing the film shoot. I feel like it took at least three times more than it would have been if we used the after recording method. Throughout the production, there were scenes where the singing was perfect however the acting was bit off, vise versa, therefore it was much harder and took much longer than expected.” said director Yoon.
In order to amplify the continuum of emotional overflow, director Yoon used long take filming technique for “Hero.”
The last scene where freedom fighter Ahn Jung-geun walks up the stairs to his execution was taken over and over again, as a result they have shot over 30 different takes for that one specific scene. Therefore the actor Jung Sung-hwa who has gained over 14 kg after the main production had to lose weight twice to film the scene.
“I have never encountered this many retakes in my career, I think it is because everyone participating in the production did their absolute best and worked very hard. If I was given a chance to re do this type of life production of musical movie, I am not sure whether I would take the opportunity. Mainly because it was too hard for too many people.” director chuckled throughout his interview.
South Korean musical movie “Hero” will be premiering on theater one week after the premiere of global box office movie “Avatar: The Way of Water” on December 14. “If ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is visually pleasing movie, our movie ‘Hero’ is heartwarming movie,” adding “I am praying with very calmly.” addressed director Yoon.
“Life is hard nowadays, I think everyone is a hero because we are doing our best at places that we belong, I hope the movie ‘Hero’ will provide warmth to those who need support.”
