His 1980 debut novel is a historical murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327, which follows the story of the British monk William chasing after the clue to a murder crime that occurred at a monastery in Italy.

The intellectual mystery, which combines Aristotle’s logic, Thomas Aquinas’ theology, Francis Bacon’s empiricist philosophy, and Eco’s extensive anthropological knowledge, has been acknowledged and acclaimed as a compilation of 10,000 books.

The world-renowned author won the Stretch Award in 1981, which was followed by the Medicis Award in 1982. His book was then selected as Memorable Book of the 20th Century by the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1999.
