SEOUL, Apr. 21 (Yonhap) -- The city of Uijeongbu in Gyeonggi Province will hold the Central Asia Film Festival for two days from April 28, the city confirmed Thursday.

In particular, 12 films from five different Central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as three specially invited countries, including Azerbaijan, Mongolia, and Indonesia, will be screened free of charge at CGV Uijeongbu and Megabox Minrak on the 29th.

The city has joined hands with Shinhan University to organize this special international film festival in order to showcase diverse Central Asian films that have garnered international attention but are relatively unknown domestically.

The festival’s opening ceremony is scheduled to be held at Shinhan University Gymnasium on the afternoon of the 28th, during which films mentioned above will be introduced. In the meantime, taekwondo performances will celebrate the opening of this festival along with a hand-printing ceremony for the major guests.

Several red-hot South Korean girl groups, including STAYC, Mamamoo+, and OH MY GIRL, will also be delivering celebratory performances.

Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, “Korea and Central Asia have developed a deep trust for each other and have been carrying out active cultural exchanges,” adding, “This upcoming film festival is expected to serve as an opportunity for local citizens to get a taste of new foreign cultures and peoples.”

Details on the opening ceremony and movie screening schedule are available on the city’s official website and social media.
