Folk museum to host Daeboreum event: 'Wish on moon structures, cast off bad luck'

SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- A hands-on event celebrating the traditions of Jeongwol Daeboreum, a holiday once marked to pray for a good harvest and good health, will be held at a museum.

The National Folk Museum of Korea said on Monday that it will host the “Byeongo Year Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival” on March 2.

Jeongwol Daeboreum, which falls on the 15th day of the lunar year’s first month, marks the first full moon of the year. In agrarian society, it signaled the start of the farming season, with communities gathering to view the moon, make wishes, burn moon structures and fly kites.

Visitors can experience the traditions by hanging wish notes on sacred straw ropes tied to a moon structure installed in the museum lobby. Programs also include making talismanic kites to ward off bad luck and crafting straw effigies believed to block misfortune, as well as watching videos on Daeboreum customs.

At 2 p.m. on the day of the event, a “jisinbapgi” folk percussion performance will take place in the museum courtyard. Details are available on the museum’s website (www.nfm.go.kr
