Korean Heritage Association opens 'Gandhara Cultural Heritage Research Center' in Pakistan

SEOUL March 3 (Yonhap) -- A research facility supported by the South Korean government in order to preserve and manage the remaining of Gandhara ruins left in Northern part of Pakistan has opened.

According to the Korean Heritage Association, Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation and Korean Heritage Association has opened up the Gandhara Cultural Heritage Research Center on March 2 (Pakistan time).

This will be the first research facility within Pakistan in order to preserve and manage the remaining.

The facility renovated the first floor of the National Archaeology Museum of Pakistan with research facilities, educational, analysis stations, conference room and more.

Moreover, the Korean Heritage Association has installed various equipments needed to analyzed and preserve the remaining of Gandhara Cultural Heritage.

“The opening of the facility has laid a foundation on behalf of the environment for future analysis and research regarding Gandhara Cultural Heritage,” adding “It means a lot to help out the research process of the Gandhara Cultural Heritage because the East Asian Buddhism was heavily influenced by the culture.” addressed official of the Korean Heritage Administration.

Starting in 2021, The Korean Heritage Association has been working on a “Gandhara Cultural Development and Tourism Resource Development Policy Support Project,” in order to come up with an infrastructure to preserve the heritage by investing over 4.8 billion won, the project is expected to continue on until 2025.

Gandhara, is an old name for the Peshawar region, and from the second century to the 5th century it acquired unique style of art influenced by Buddhism and ancient Greek culture.
