SEOUL April 8 (Yonhap) -- Japanese animation movie “Suzume” successfully attracted over 4 million audiences.
The movie import company Media Castle addressed on Saturday that “Suzume’ has successfully managed to exceed over 4 million audiences.
As a result, “Suzume” has become the second Japanese animation to exceed over 4 million audiences following the lead of “The First Slam Dunk” in S.Korea.
“Suzume” which premiered on March 8, manages to attract viewers comparatively faster than “The First Slam Dunk” while guarding its place on top of the S.Korean box office.
One of the reasons “Suzume” was able to succeed this big is director Shinkai Makoto’s reputation and solid fan base, and the warmhearted message presented by the movie.
Director Shinkai Makoto, known for his previous productions, “Your Name” in 2016, “5 Centimeters per second” in 2007 and more, due to its detailed depiction of human feelings.
Especially the movie “Your Name” provided the director Shinkai Makoto with the title and fame due to its success of attracting over 3.8 million audiences and fame which continued on for over 7 years.
Jung Ji-wook movie critic addressed “One of the reasons ‘Suzume’ was able to reach such success was the name value director Shinkai Makoto had,” adding “The movie ‘Suzume’ was able to satisfy the viewers with the expected name value followed by the author, that is why the movie became so successful.”
Moreover, the fact that the movie depicts a story which one can easily relate to.
“Suzume” provides comfort to those who have suffered from the Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami in 2011. On top of the storyline viewers have suffered from wide spread of Covid 19 therefore the movie provides strong connection with the audiences.
Moreover, “Suzume” has been invited to the Berlin International Film Festival, this is the first time Japanese movie has been invited since Miyazaki Hayao’s “Spirited Away” in 2002.
Kim Bong-seok movie critic addressed “The animation ‘Suzume’ manages to provide joy and excitement to adults as well,” adding “The potential of the movie has made the success streak possible.”
According to the data collected by S.Korean movie theater CGV, 38.3 percent of the viewers were in their 20s and 22.5 percent of the audiences were in their 40s and 9.8 percent of the audiences were in their 50s.
Moreover, out of the 100 audiences, 16 of them were the ones who visited the theater more than once.
Hwang Jae-hyun, strategic planning division of CGV, addressed “There are a lot of viewers who returned back to the theater to watch the movie more than once, therefore the fame and success will continue on even after it exceeds over 4 million audiences.”
