South Korea’s already got a major standoff with Iran on its hands in 2021 – one that’s placed human lives, an oil tanker, and billions of dollars at stake. The South Korean-flagged MT Hankuk Chemi was seized by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, along with 20 crew members from South Korea, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. But why? Iran claims the tanker was detained “due to repeated violations of marine environmental law,” though there’s no objective evidence of that and the ship’s operator denies this allegation.
