Acting President Choi orders swift response to Trump's policy changes

SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Yonhap) -- Acting President Choi Sang-mok on Friday called on the government to take swift measures in response to policy changes under the new Donald Trump administration, according to his office.

During a meeting aimed at assessing the latest developments in U.S. government policies, Choi also emphasized the importance of early responses, the finance ministry said.

Choi was briefed on the U.S. administration's latest trade policies, including its decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, the ministry said.

Trump has vowed to impose high tariffs on imported goods and implement a series of protectionist measures. He has yet to provide detailed plans for trade policies or outline additional protectionist actions against other trade partners.

Choi was also briefed on a U.S. Senate confirmation hearing for Trump's nominee for commerce secretary.

During the hearing on Wednesday (local time), Howard Lutnick accused South Korea and Japan of having "taken advantage of" America's "good nature."
