SEOUL, Dec. 26 (Yonhap) -- The number of South Koreans who moved to different residences in the country last month fell to the lowest level in nearly 50 years, data showed Thursday.

Approximately 466,000 people changed residences in November, a 6.1 percent decrease from 496,000 during the same month last year, according to Statistics Korea. It marks the smallest reading since 1974.

The population mobility rate, referring to the percentage of those relocating per 100 people, inched down 0.7 percentage point from a year earlier to 11.1 percent in November. It too marked the smallest reading since 1974.

The decline is attributed to a combination of factors, including the prolonged downturn in the housing market and an aging population, both of which have contributed to a steady decrease in residential mobility.

By region, Seoul saw a net outflow of 5,715 people last month, while Gyeonggi Province, which surrounds the capital, and the northwestern port city of Incheon posted net inflows of 4,627 and 1,011, respectively.
