SEOUL, Dec. 29 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg expressed condolences Sunday to the victims of a plane crash that left at least 124 dead at an airport in the southwestern county of Muan.

"I was heartbroken to hear about the tragedy at Muan Airport this morning," Goldberg said.

"My sincerest condolences go out to the victims and their loved ones, and my thoughts are with the people of Korea during this difficult time," he added.

The accident happened at 9:07 a.m., when the Jeju Air flight veered off the runway while landing and collided with a fence wall at Muan International Airport in Muan county, South Jeolla Province, about 288 kilometers southwest of Seoul.

The authorities have confirmed 124 deaths from the accident as of 3:18 p.m.
