Yoon expresses condolences to victims of plane crash

SEOUL, Dec. 29 (Yonhap) -- Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed condolences to the victims of a deadly plane crash in the southwestern part of the country Sunday.

Yoon posted his message on Facebook for victims and their families following the crash of a Jeju Air plane at Muan International Airport in the county of Muan, South Jeolla Province.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft carrying 181 people, including six crew members, belly-landed and crashed into a concrete wall before bursting into flames, leaving 177 people dead and two others missing as of 8 p.m. Sunday. Two crew members were rescued.

"A devastating accident happened at Muan International Airport today. I am deeply saddened and heartbroken," Yoon wrote. "I'd like to send my deepest condolences to the victims and their loved ones. I am convinced the government will do its best to handle the situation and provide support for victims and their families."

Yoon also asked the government to ensure the safety of firefighting authorities and other rescue workers on the ground and added he will "stay with the people" to ensure a quick recovery from the crash.

Yoon was impeached in a parliamentary vote on Dec. 14, 11 days after his botched martial law imposition. He had not publicly commented on current affairs since being suspended from his duties until taking to social media Sunday.
