Army deploys 500 personnel, 27 helicopters to combat wildfires

SEOUL, Feb. 24 (Yonhap) -- The military has deployed some 500 service members and 27 helicopters to help combat wildfires raging across the country's central and southeastern regions, the Army said Tuesday.

The Army has mobilized the troops to the central cities of Seosan and Yesan in South Chungcheong Province, and Hamyang and Miryang in South Gyeongsang Province.

Firefighters have been battling wildfires in those regions that have broken out since the weekend and almost contained the main blaze.

The Army's service members were currently helping put out the remaining fire and building firebreaks to prevent the spread of the wildfires, together with forestry and firefighting authorities.

They also deployed 12 CH-47 Chinook and 15 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to help transport personnel and goods to the site.
