Outgoing Indonesian Ambassador Sulistiyanto given honorary Seoul citizenship

SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Yonhap) -- The city of Seoul granted honorary citizenship Thursday to outgoing Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Gandi Sulistiyanto in recognition of his contributions to the countries' bilateral friendship.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon conferred a certificate of honorary citizenship on Sulistiyanto at Seoul City Hall ahead of the envoy's departure set for early November.

The businessman-turned-ambassador took office as Indonesia's top envoy to Seoul in November 2021, and has since been known for his efforts to strengthen economic and cultural ties with South Korea.

The ambassador, in particular, played a key role in supplying urea solution to South Korea during a 2021 urea shortage and restoring bilateral economic cooperation in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his term, a comprehensive economic partnership agreement between the countries went into effect, benefiting South Korea's exports of online games and cultural content to Indonesia.

Under his leadership, a series of cultural events were held earlier this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the countries' diplomatic relationship.
