■ 2027 fiscal policy to potentially reach 800 tln won with goal of AI transformation

SEOUL -- South Korea will pursue an expansionary fiscal policy next year to accelerate a major transition centered on artificial intelligence (AI), the government said Monday, with spending potentially approaching 800 trillion won (US$529 billion).

Under a set of guidelines approved by the Cabinet on the day, the government also aims to foster new growth engines and place greater fiscal emphasis on regional development, the Ministry of Planning and Budget said.

SEOUL -- The South Korean won fell against the U.S. dollar Monday as Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen joined the monthlong war in the Middle East, stoking fears of further disruptions to global oil supplies.

SEOUL -- China's national carrier has resumed direct flights between Beijing and Pyongyang, news reports said Monday, the latest sign of restored ties following the resumption of passenger train service between their capitals.

An Air China flight departed Beijing Capital International Airport early Monday en route to Pyongyang, marking the resumption of flights between the two cities after a six-year hiatus, according to AFP and China's Xinhua agency.
