Seoul shares up over 1 pct late Mon. morning on tech, energy gains

SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded more than 1 percent higher late Monday morning as investors scooped up chip and energy shares.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 56.2 points, or 1.23 percent, to 4,642.52 as of 11:20 a.m.

Tech and energy shares led the gains.

Chip giant Samsung Electronics rose 0.86 percent, and SK hynix jumped 1.75 percent.

Energy firm Doosan Enerbility vaulted 4.63 percent, and the state-run Korea Power Corp. advanced 2.23 percent.

Construction firms also lent support to the rally, with Hyundai Engineering & Construction spiking 13.72 percent, and GS Engineering & Construction advancing 1.55 percent.

Pharmaceutical giant Samsung Biologics fell 1.22 percent, while Samyang Foods, best known for the spicy Buldak ramyeon series, lost 1.91 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,462.15 won against the greenback at 11:20 a.m., down 4.55 won from the previous session.
